On June 3, 2013, I had the opportunity to play in a golf tournament that supports the U.S. Rowing Team. The event was held at The Bedens Brook Club in Skillman, NJ.
I have played in this tournament for the past eight years and each year I look forward to the invitation for a few reasons.
First, the staff at Bedens Brook does an outstanding job hosting the event. The course is in great condition, they are very accommodating to all of the participants and after a day of golf we enjoy a silent auction and a great meal. It’s a really fun day.
The event raises money for athletes to pursue their Olympic dream. With support from participants, sponsors and donors it is the largest fundraising event of the year for U.S. Rowing, making it possible to provide its athletes with the coaching, training and competitive experiences necessary in their quest for success at both the world championships and Olympic Games.
Playing in the tournament gives me the opportunity to catch up with friends and colleagues I don’t see as often as I’d like to.
Every year I always meet some new and interesting people. And you never know what opportunities may arise from a conversation or an introduction.
So a day on the golf course let me connect with old friends, meet new ones, raise money for a worthy cause and it was fun. What a great way to spend the day. It didn’t hurt that my team came in 2nd place either!
The only thing that would have made the day better would have been making a hole-in-one on the sixth hole to win a new Mercedes Benz. Maybe next year…
